GO DEEPER:

Why we work here:
The Great Plains shelter roaming wildlife such as pronghorn and bison; about three-quarters of the country's breeding bird species breed here; ranchers and farmers depend on the land's ecological health.

Threats to this ecosystem:
Invasive species, unsustainable ranching practices, incompatible land use, changing hydrology, poor fire management.

What we do here:
Preserve what remains of the Great Plains to create the largest network of protected grasslands in the world extending from Canada to Mexico.

Grasslands campaign priority:
From the prairies of North America to the savannas of Africa, grasslands adorn our world with wildlife that inspires us, food and water that nourishes us and ways of life that define us. The Conservancy is working with partners to protect the last intact grasslands around the world.

Encounter Earth's largest protected tallgrass prairie; explore some of the world's finest Native American artifacts; enjoy concerts featuring one of history's greatest composers. Live each day to the rhythms of nature and culture.

Highlights:

A celebrated Mozart Festival is the prelude to your wilderness experience — attend the first of nine concerts in a hall designed by Frank Lloyd Wright's chief Taliesin architect. The next morning, stroll hills covered with wildflowers at The Nature Conservancy's Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. Be on the lookout for newborn bison, scissor-tailed flycatchers, badgers and hawks; learn how the Conservancy collaborates with ranchers to implement prescribed burning and grazing techniques; visit our ecological research laboratory. Farther afield, view Native American art at the Woolaroc, Gilcrease and Osage Tribal museums, see cascades and waterfalls at Osage Hills State Park, explore the ancient Cross Timbers ecosystem and visit the heartland town of Sedan, Kansas. Spend each night in the comfort of Hotel Phillips in Bartlesville, a stroll from the hall where most of the major concerts are performed. Awaken each morning to a new adventure — whether you're anticipating a Native American picnic or trekking to the prairie for a horizon-to-horizon sunrise serenade.
