Connect with the land:

Help extract spotted knapweed, an invasive threat to rich natural grasses along the Rocky Mountain Front (optional).

Why we work here:

Grizzly bears, elk and a vast diversity of wildlife roam the Rocky Mountain Front in landscapes little changed from the days of Lewis and Clark.

Threats to this ecosystem:

Subdivided ranch land, invasive species, climate change, wind farm development, unsustainable timber management.

What we do here:

Partner with Native Americans, government agencies, The Trust for Public Land and other groups to expand migration corridors via programs like the Montana Legacy Project—conserving 312,000 acres of critical forestlands; help ranchers find ways to make a living while enriching the land; conduct research such as tracking migration patterns.

Encounter Big Sky country, where rugged mountains meet sweeping plains.

Make the Pine Butte Guest Ranch your base for exploring one of America’s wildest landscapes—where eagles soar overhead, grizzlies and elk roam the forests and the prairie is painted with flowers.With a naturalist, discover the rugged country sheltering cougars and lynx, elk and moose; wander in meadows where more than 700 species of plants live. Through wildlife walks and specialist’s talks, learn about our work on The Rocky Mountain Front. Each day, choose a leisurely hike, a horseback ride or a dip in the pool; each night, rest in your own comfortable cabin under a sparkling blanket of stars.

Highlights:

  • Enjoy the rustic charm of the Pine Butte Guest Ranch, featured in The New York Times;
  • Hike or horseback ride through colorful hills, endless prairies and mountain meadows;
  • Look for rare plants in the Pine Butte Swamp Preserve, one of the grizzly’s last refuges;
  • Tour the Gollehon Ranch, site of a Conservancy conservation easement;
  • See grasslands that sustain the long-billed curlew and ferruginous hawk;
  • Enjoy Western music and wagon rides, a morning cookout and sizzling steak fry; and
  • See examples of prairie ecology, rangeland management and ranching alliances during your stay, plus small-scale wind and solar power projects close-up.

“Although this was our eighth trip to Montana, we left with a more complete understanding of Montana's remarkable natural history than we were able to gain on all previous trips combined. The Nature Conservancy's commitment to proactive, collaborative work with its neighbors to achieve positive results for conservation was evident in all the attitudes expressed by Guest Ranch and Swamp Preserve staff.”
