GO DEEPER:

Why we work here:
The abundant Rocky Mountain Front contains some of the most intact habitat in the lower 48 states.

Threats to this ecosystem:
Subdivision of ranch land, effects of oil and gas development, climate change.

What we do here:
Partner with ranchers, Native Americans and government agencies to link habitats and create a migration corridor for wildlife.

Forests campaign priority:
The Rocky Mountains shelter some of the nation's richest diversity of plants and animals. Here and around the world, the Conservancy works to protect the forests that provide us with the elements essential for life—shade and shelter, refuge and refreshment, food and fiber, clean air and water.

Explore the ecologically-rich forests and foothills of the Rocky Mountains' Eastern Front, where elk, bighorn sheep and grizzly bears roam, dinosaur fossils reveal nature's secrets and eagles soar above bright tapestries of flowers.

Highlights:

Immerse yourself in deep country little changed since the days of Lewis and Clark. Hike and horseback ride on colorful hills and Big Sky prairies; tour the Pine Butte Swamp Preserve, where you'll learn how our work enables grizzly migration. Visit a working ranch and discover ways of the Old and the New West ... learn about ranching and the cattle industry in Montana today. All week, walk and ride with Conservancy staff who can answer questions about the wildlife and over 650 plant species that live here. At night, participate in discussions on how we're helping protect this area's incredible biological diversity ... and take a dip in our heated pool before you relax in your own cabin at the Pine Butte Guest Ranch. We'll spoil you with handmade furniture, a private bath, your own stone fireplace and home-cooked meals — including a Western-style steak fry. The ranch has even been featured in The New York Times; this week, it's your place ... in the heart of the largest wild expanse in the lower 48 states.
