Connect with the land:

Irrigate, weed or plant seedlings in a mountain nursery in the heart of Mexico (optional).

Why we work here:

Mexico’s tropical forests provide habitat for rare species, medicine for people and help mitigate the impact of climate change.

Threats to this ecosystem:

Illegal logging, climate change, invasive species, unsustainable agriculture, altered fire regimes.

What we do here:

Collaborate with local governments, landowners, businesses and partners to conserve critical forest corridors in Central America for migratory birds and rare mammals; train land managers in prescribed fire techniques.

Witness butterflies wintering in central Mexico—one of nature’s most magnificent sights.

Come to the Monarch butterfly’s ancestral winter refuge the only place in the world where you can hear the whir of wings as butterflies take flight. Travel by foot and horseback in the forest highlands; take a bird-watching cruise on Laguna de Ávandaro. During your travels, visit the charming mountain village of Angangueo and the ancient town of Toluca, and see the red-tiled roofs and bright bougainvillea of scenic Valle de Bravo. As you take in the beauty of this biologically rich country, learn about the Conservancy’s work in Mexico and forests worldwide.

Highlights:

  • Experience three butterfly sanctuaries: El Rosario, Chincua and Piedra Herrada;
  • See the sun shine through monarchs’ wings; be illuminated by their glow as they rise above you;
  • Learn the secrets of how millions of monarchs make an epic journey of up to 3,000 miles;
  • Visit a spectacular botanical garden and a
    breathtaking waterfall;
  • Tour a tree nursery and help care for plants which will soon protect butterfly sanctuaries; and
  • Enjoy mountain villages, plus a luxurious stopover at the Hotel Avandaro Spa & Resort.
