The Legacy Club

The Legacy Club

The Legacy Club is a special group of people who have chosen to translate their passion and caring for the natural world into a gift that provides a legacy for future generations. Meet 15 of our Legacy Club members—they'll share with you their memories and experiences that helped shape their commitments to conservation.

Jo Baker

Charitable Gift Annuity

When Jim and Monique Simmonds decided they wanted to make a gift to protect nature, they discovered the ease of establishing a charitable gift annuity with The Nature Conservancy. In addition to supporting conservation, their gift allowed them to save on taxes and receive a fixed income. They call it a "win-win situation!"
Jo Baker

Charitable Remainder Trust

Combining their love for nature and their need to produce income for future years, Bob Summers and Orly Yadin worked with a Nature Conservancy gift planner to establish a charitable remainder trust. Their gift allowed them to help nurture the lands and waters they care about while providing supplemental income with potential for growth for their later years.

Charitable Remainder Unitrust
& Charitable Gift Annuity

Jo Baker’s lifelong love of nature led her to contact The Nature Conservancy when she began thinking about retirement and how she could continue to support the lands and waters she values so much. With the help of our gift planners and input from her advisors, she chose to fund two different life–income gifts using some stock she owned. In doing so she saved on taxes, receives a steady income and is helping preserve the natural world for future generations.
Betty Anne Schenk

Real Estate

Nature Conservancy supporter Betty Anne Schenk had two concerns: She seldom used her Florida vacation home and she wanted to supplement her retirement income. By donating her house to the Conservancy, she found a way to provide a lifetime income for herself and save on taxes, but most importantly she could provide support for her lifelong passion: conservation.
Val and Sheri Schnabl

Bequest

Val and Sheri Schnabl have always enjoyed getting out into nature, whether in their own back yard or when traveling across the country. For them, the importance of conservation always comes back to three words: "wide open spaces." The Schnabls have remembered The Nature Conservancy through a generous bequest commitment that will ensure that more wide open spaces remain that way.
Don and Elizabeth Lawrence

Bequest

Don and Elizabeth Lawrence were life–long conservationists, and their devotion and love for the natural world culminated with their bequest gift to The Nature Conservancy. Through a gift from the Lawrences' estate, The Nature Conservancy will be able to carry on the conservation accomplishments Don and Libby made during their lives.

The Legacy Club

Gift Annuity

When Allan & Muriel Kotin established a charitable gift annuity with The Nature Conservancy, they made a donation to the natural world, received significant tax benefits and provided themselves with a steady stream of income in return. For the Kotins it was "a no–brainer!"
George Jett

Gift Annuity

"We need to educate others about the need to conserve habitat for the plants and animals that can't protect themselves," says George Jett, a former EPA employee. This is why he has supported The Nature Conservancy for many years and has established three deferred gift annuities with the Conservancy.

Austin Okie

Individual Retirement Account

In addition to making extraordinary gifts of land, Austin Okie has for many years supported the Conservancy's work with monetary gifts as well. When the Pension Protection Act of 2006 became law, Okie saw a win–win opportunity: a chance to preserve the natural places he cares about while also gaining significant tax savings. Using this temporary legislation, he was able to make a cash gift to the Conservancy from his IRA without incurring income tax on the withdrawal.

Joe and Beth Brooks

Real Estate

Joe and Beth Brooks, longtime supporters of The Nature Conservancy, once worried what would happen to their home when they were no longer able to live in it. They were thrilled to find out that through a retained life estate, they could advance the conservation values that they cherish, benefit the Conservancy and remain in their home for as long as they wished.
Tim and Teresa Myrick

Real Estate

You might not think it would be possible to make a significant, ecologically important gift of land to The Nature Conservancy in your lifetime while at the same time deferring capital gains tax and maintaining use of the property. Yet that was just the case when Tim and Teresa Myrick sold their vacation home lot in South Carolina and acquired 80 acres of pristine mountain land in a Conservancy priority area in their home state of Tennessee.

Alan and Betsy Carpenter

Charitable Remainder Unitrust

Having hiked and traveled throughout the California landscape together, Alan and Betsy Carpenter have a sincere appreciation for nature. The Carpenters expressed their commitment to preserving the great outdoors through their charitable remainder unitrust with The Nature Conservancy.

Charlie Soderquist

Donor Advised Fund

Facing potentially significant capital gains taxes, Charlie Soderquist, who was a California–based author, entrepreneur and academic, made an outright gift to The Nature Conservancy's Donor Advised Fund in 2000.
