Conservation Science

The Nature Conservancy's Great Places nature e-newsletter

George JettAs a child, George Jett loved to explore the forest near his home in rural Maryland. Now as an adult, George works for the EPA and spends his leisure time taking photographs of birds and flowers nurturing his “life-long love affair with nature.” We need to “educate others about the need to conserve habitat for the plants and animals that can't protect themselves,” says George. This is also why he has supported The Nature Conservancy for many years and has established three deferred gift annuities with the Conservancy.

George has a particular interest in birds, which developed as a young adult when he began to identify and photograph birds where he lived. Since then, he has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Central and South America on a quest to photograph an array of bird species. His photos from Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela and other locations will be included in an upcoming CD ROM of the birds of Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay. George also finds time for local issues; he sits on the board of a small non-profit land trust in Charles County, Maryland, and he and his partner, Dr. Gwen Brewer, help raise funds for the organization.

Due to his interests in conservation work abroad, George's three deferred gift annuities were all designated for the Conservancy's work internationally. George chose to establish deferred gift annuities with the Conservancy to provide income after retirement and support conservation. He recommends this type of gift to others since it provides for “a good return on your investment compared to other investment types, and you get a tax deduction at the time you donate.”

George's message to fellow Conservancy supporters is this: “Please help protect the planet. We have an obligation and the resources to allow planet Earth to evolve naturally, and with the help of gift annuities, the Nature Conservancy can work to achieve this goal.”

About a Deferred Gift Annuity

This version of the charitable gift annuity is especially designed for younger donors. Called the deferred gift annuity, it makes fixed annual payments to you and/or another beneficiary for life, with payments commencing at a future date.
